Eagles Dismantle Indians in Season's First Conference Matchup

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman Men's tennis (3-5) begin conference play with a victory over Catawba College (1-3) on Saturday, Mar. 4th.

"We played much better this time around," men's tennis head coach Felipe Charry said. "This win is big for us and helps us prepare for Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday."

Doubles

Carson-Newman won their fourth doubles point of the year after their matchup against Catawba. The Eagles are 3-1 when winning the doubles portion of the match, with their lone loss coming last week against the Lee Flames.

Marc Janse and Rintaro Oka recorded their fourth win of the season when they lined up against Marcos Castatres and Taketoshi Nanao. The Eagles won the set 6-2 to advance to a 4-4 record.

Ids Waterbolk and Gjorgji Jankulovski won their third match of the year when they faced off against Paul Dekester and Sebastian Zabala. The Eagles won 7-6 to advance to 3-0 as a pair.

Javier Crespo Sanchez and Marnix Van Dalen rounded out the doubles lineup when they faced off against Tyler Juergens and Ryan Little. The Eagles duo lost the set 7-6, but Carson-Newman already clinched the doubles point after winning two of the three doubles sets.

Singles

Van Dalen returned to the one spot for the Eagles for the third time this season. The sophomore picked up his first win of the season in the one spot when he lined up against Castares. Van Dalen won the first game 6-3 but dropped the second game 2-6. Van Dalen clinched the set with a 6-3 game.

Janse took on Kane Elkin in the two spot. Janse won the set with games of 6-2 and 6-2. The Senior advances to a 2-1 record in the two spot and a 5-3 record overall.

Jankulovski took on Juergens in the three spot. Jankulovski won his fifth match of the year after defeating Juergens 6-3 and 6-4.

Oka won his first set of the season when he took on Dekester in the four. Oka won in consecutive games of 6-3.

Catawba's Little secured the Indian's lone point when he lined up against Waterbolk in the five. Little won the first game, but Waterbolk found enough momentum to take the second 6-4. Little proved to have more gas in the tank to take the third 6-2.

Crespo Sanchez saw his second action of the day when he lined up against Zabala in the six. The Eagle dropped the first game 6-1 but was able to rally back to win the second 6-3. The Eagle was able to take the set with a score of 10-7.

Carson-Newman returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 8th, in Hickory, N.C., to take on Lenoir-Rhyne.
