Eagles Show Resilience in Tough Loss

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Carson-Newman's men's tennis (1-4) loses their fourth consecutive match after a clash with Young Harris College (6-2) on Sunday, Feb. 19th.

Doubles

Rintaro Oka and Marc Janse won their first match of the day when they saw Pieke Bouman and Janis Auslands playing in the one spot for the Mountain Lions. Oka and Janse won in sets of 6-1, marking the pair's first duos victory since their season-opening match against Belmont Abbey.

 Gjorgji Jankulovski and Javier Crespo Sanchez saw Rodrigo Medoza and Chimo Mingues Ribera in doubles action. Mendoza and Ribera won 6-4.

Ids Waterbolk and Lars Hordijk lined up against Gavin Thomas and Mason Harmon. The Mountain Lions won the set 7-6 and the tiebreaker 7-5.

The Eagles lose the doubles portion of the match for the fourth straight match. The Eagles are 0-4 when losing the doubles point.

Singles

Janse remained in the one spot for the Eagles as he has for most of the season. He competed against Rodrigo Mendoza. Janse won in sets of 6-4 and 6-2. Janse is 2-2 in the one spot on the year.

Marnix Van Dalen captured the first singles victory of the day when he competed against Pieke Bouman in the two spot. Van Dalen is 3-1 when playing in the two position for the Eagles and is 3-2 overall on the year.

Oka dropped his matchup against Ribera in sets of 6-2 and 7-6.

Jankulovski matched up against Auslands in the four spot. Jankulovski won in back-to-back 6-3 sets. Jankulovski is 2-2 on the year in the four position.

Waterbolk dropped his first set against Thomas but bounced back to win his second set 7-5. Thomas regained momentum in the third set with a 7-5 victory.

Crespo Sanchez faced Eric DelValle in the six spot. DelValle won in sets of 6-1 and 6-2.

The Eagles are on their first four-game losing streak since the 2021 spring season, when they lost four in a row in the middle of March. Carson-Newman had not lost four out of the first five games of a season since the 2019 season when the Eagles finished 3-17.

Carson-Newman returns to action against Union (Ky.) on Tuesday, Feb. 21st. The Eagles are 1-2 against Union, with their last win coming back on Mar. 20th, 2010.
