The Eagles Sweep the Pioneers, Beat the Patriots, in the Final Action of the Fall Season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman closes out the fall season by winning eight out of 10 matches on the final day of the Eagle Invitational.

Carson-Newman 3, University of Cumberlands 2

Marc Janse began the day in the number one position for the Eagles. Janse was matched up against the Patriots' Martin Muller. Janse quickly dropped Muller in back-to-back sets of 6-3.

Gjorgji Jankulovski started strong in the number two spot against Christian De La Fuente Novado. The Eagle captured the first set with a narrow victory of 7-6. De la Fuente Novado could bounce back to win the second set 2-6. Jankulovski halted the Patriot's comeback attempt with a 10-7 overtime set victory.

Japan native Rintaro Oka had a successful outing in the number three spot for the Eagles. Oka took down Mattis Le Montagner 6-4. Montagner got the better of Oka in the second set with a 6-3 dub. Oka and Montagner would compete in the longest match of the day for the third overtime set. Oka was able to outlast his opponent with a 13-11 victory.

Ids Waterbolk moved into the number four spot for the Eagles. Waterbolk matched up with Hung-Ju Wu. Waterbolk dropped both sets to Wu with scores of 7-5 and 7-6.

Joshua Ott lined up against Liam Savio in the number-five spot. Ott could not find any rhythm as he dropped his sets 6-1 and 6-4.

Carson-Newman 5, Tusculum 0

The Eagles kept the same lineup heading into their matchup against their SAC rival.

Janse took on Robin Eldin in the number one spot. Janse once again easily won in sets of 6-2 and 6-1. Janse finished 24-9 on the day, which marks the second gameday in a row where Janse finished with the best record on the team.

Jankulovski took on Marco Jaliaian in the number two position. The Eagle was able to win in sets of 6-3 and 6-4.

Oka marched into another overtime match when he played Tusculum's Ivan Ivars. Oka lost the first set 7-5 but lost the second 6-4. The Eagle won the final set 10-6. Oka was on the court for 82 points, the most of anybody in the invitational.

Waterbolk was able to bounce back in his second singles matchup of the day. Yuki Ikeda couldn't stop the Eagle as he coasted to a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Ott matched up against Felipe Velasquez for the final matchup of the day. Ott was able to capture the victory with back-to-back 6-3 wins.

The Eagles were able to sweep the Pioneers this time after losing two out of three matches played earlier this season at the Lincoln Memorial University Invitational to begin the season.

Carson-Newman will return to action on Feb. 4th in Augusta, Ga., to take on Augusta University to kick off the spring season.
