Eagles Defeat Wolves, Clinch Third in Conference

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Carson-Newman men's tennis (12-7, 10-2 South Atlantic Conference) takes down Newberry (8-10, 5-7 SAC) with a final score of 4-3 to win the last game of the regular season.

Charry's Eagles clinched a top-three spot in the conference for the first time since 2006, when the Eagles finished 14-6. The Eagles' 10 conference wins are the most in program history.

Gjorgji Jankulovski finished 12-0 in conference play. Jankulovski is on a 12-game winning streak in singles play and leads all Eagles with 16 singles victories this season.

Doubles

Carson-Newman lost the doubles point in consecutive matches for the first time since the Eagles lost four straight to begin the season.

Lars Hordijk and Marnix Van Dalen captured Carson-Newman's only winning doubles set when they defeated Lawrence Friedland and Marcel Schomburg 6-4. Hordijk and Van Dalen finished 12-1 this year as a pair, marking the most wins out of any duo this season.

Marc Janse and Rintaro Oka paired up for a team-leading 19th time this season to take on Mateo Bivol and Laurenz Grabia. The Wolves won 7-5.

Ids Waterbolk and Jankulovski dropped their set against Enzo Blavignat and Joshua Fritz 7-6.

Singles

Van Dalen lined up in the two spot for the Eagles for the 12th time this season to take on Schomburg. Van Dalen cruised to a two-set victory after defeating Schomburg 6-3 and 6-4. Van Dalen is third on the team in singles wins with 12.

Jankulovski won his 16th match of the season when he took on Fritz in the four. Jankulovski won the first set 6-4 before handing his opponent a bagel for the 6-0 second set victory. Jankulovski leads all Eagles after putting up six bagels this season.

Ids Waterbolk dropped his first set against Friedland 6-4, but Waterbolk was able to respond in the second set 6-1. Waterbolk carried his momentum into the final set, winning 6-1 to mark his 11th victory this season and the 48th of his career.

Hordijk clinched the game when he defeated Lucas Mruk in the six spot. Hordijk put up a 6-0 bagel in the first set before taking the second set 6-1 to mark his 30th career singles victory. 

Janse lined up against the ITA's 44th-ranked singles player in Bivol. Bivol won in sets of 6-0 and 6-4. Oka dropped his first set against Grabia but responded with a 6-2 second-set victory. Grabia won the final set 6-4 to earn Newberry's third point of the day.

Carson-Newman's win clinched third place in the conference ahead of the conference tournament. The Eagles will play the sixth-seeded Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters (14-9, 7-5 SAC) on Apr. 20th in the conference quarterfinals. The Eagles defeated Lincoln Memorial 6-1 on Apr. 5th at the Railsplitters' home courts.
