Eagles Fall in Close Conference Contest

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - #48 Carson-Newman men's tennis (5-6) drops a tightly contested matchup with #30 Tusculum University (6-4) on Wednesday, Mar. 15th. 

The contest was tied 3-3 when Rintaro Oka took on Frank Bonacia in the four spot. Oka took an early 5-0 lead in the first set before Bonacia came storming back to level the score 5-5. Oka was able to rally to take the first set 7-5. Bonacia stole the momentum in the second set to win 6-3. Players from both teams surrounded Oka and Bonacia's court to watch the tiebreaking set. Bonacia took down Oka 6-3 to clinch the Pioneers' victory. 

Doubles

Carson-Newman lost the doubles portion of the match for the first time since Feb. 19th. Lars Hordijk and Marnix Van Dalen kept their winning streak despite Carson-Newman losing two of the three sets. 

Hordijk and Van Dalen continued their unbeaten streak during a matchup with Kenta Kondou and Nathan Matsuguma. The Eagles won the set 6-1 to advance to 5-0 as a pair this season. 

Marc Janse and Oka played their 11th match together in the one spot for the Eagles when they lined up against Nemanjo Subanovic and Marco Jalalian. The Pioneers won the set 6-4. 

Gjorgji Jankulovski and Ids Waterbolk took on Will Gee and Rhodri Atkinson in the final doubles match. The Eagles lost 7-5, awarding the doubles point to the Pioneers. 

Singles

Janse played in the two spot for just the fourth time this season. Janse took down Subanovic in sets of 6-1 and 6-2 to win Carson-Newman's first point. Janse advances to 3-1 when playing in the two, 3-0 when playing against Subanovic, and 8-3 overall on the season. 

Jankulovski picked up his eighth win of the season when he took on Kondou in the three spot. Jankulovski narrowly won the first set 6-4 before pulling away in the second set to win 6-1. Jankulovski is 6-1 when playing in the three spot this season. 

Waterbolk was the final Eagle to notch a win against the Pioneers when he lined up against Ivan Ivars. The pair was tied at 6-6 in the first set before Waterbolk pulled away to win 7-6. The Eagle carried momentunm into the second set, winning 5-2. 

Van Dalen faced Atkinson in the one spot. Atkinson won in sets of 6-1 and 6-0. Javier Crespo Sanchez lost his match against Matsuguma in sets of 6-2 and 6-3. Oka lost his match against Bonacia in sets of 5-7, 6-3, and 6-3. 

Carson-Newman falls to 3-1 in conference play. The Eagles continue conference play on Saturday, Mar. 18th, against #20 Anderson University.
