Consistent Play Leads to Perfect Outing for Charry's Squad

HICKORY, N.C. - Carson-Newman men's tennis (4-5) racks up their first shutout of the season after a conference clash with Lenoir Rhyne (4-9) on Wednesday, Mar. 8th. The Eagles advance to 2-0 in conference play.

 The Eagles are 4-1 when winning the doubles portion of the match. The pairs of Jakulovski/Waterbolk and Van Dalen/Hordijk are undefeated so far this season. The Eagles move to 14-13 in all doubles sets so far this year and have a positive record in the category for the first time this season.

Doubles

Marc Janse and Rintaro Oka lined up in the one spot for the seventh time this season. The Eagles won 6-4 against Zachary Cox and Vadym Rogynskyi. Janse and Oka hold a record of 5-4 as a pair so far this season.

Gjorgji Jankulovski and Ids Waterbolk faced Joel Hemmings and Mauricio Hernandez in the two spot. The Eagles squeezed out a 7-6 tightly contested win to mark the pair's fourth straight win.

Marnix Van Dalen and Lars Hordijk rounded doubles action with a matchup against Connor Gibson and Mattias Selde. The Eagles won 6-4 to secure the final doubles set.

Singles

Janse lined up as the one for the sixth time this season when he saw Lenoir-Rhyne's Cox. Janse overcame Cox in games of 6-4 and 6-3 to win the set. Janse is 4-2 in the one spot and 6-3 overall.

Marnix Van Dalen took on Rogynskyi in the two spot. Van Dalen dominated in games of 6-1 and 6-3 to mark his sixth win of the season.

Jankulovski showed a perfect outing when he took on Gibson in the three spot. Jankulovski is the first Eagle to sweep his opponent in consecutive 6-0 games this season. The win marks Jankulovski's sixth of the season, tying Van Dalen and Janse for the team lead.

Oka faced the Bears' Patrik Alvestrand in the four spot. Oka won the first set 6-4 but fell 7-6 in the second. Oka rallied back in the third to win the set 10-8.

Waterbolk won his third match of the season when he competed against Rufus Plane in the five. Plane took the first game 7-6, but Waterbolk was able to retaliate with a 7-6 game of his own. The Eagle drove home the victory with a 6-4 tiebreaker.

Javier Crespo Sanchez closed out the starting lineup in the sixth spot for the seventh time this season when he played against Hemmings. The pair only played a single game to eight, which saw Crespo Sanchez win 8-5.

The win marks Carson-Newman's first 7-0 victory since Apr. 16th of last year when the Eagles defeated Catawba in the regular season finale. The Eagles recorded seven 7-0 sweeps last season.

Charry's squad moves to 2-0 in conference play after finishing 8-4 last season to 6th in the SAC. Lenoir Rhyne suffered their first conference loss of the year after finishing third in the conference last season with a 9-3 record.

Carson-Newman returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 11th, in Gaffney, S.C., when they take on the Limestone Saints. The Eagles beat Limestone 7-0 when they competed last year.
