Eagles give up late goal, draw with Ohio Dominican

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Tenn.- The Carson-Newman women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Ohio Dominican Saturday morning at the Ray Conn Sports Complex in Cleveland, Tenn.

"Another frustrating result," Head Coach Simon Duffy said. "Even though we came away with a tie, we were in full control of the game and should be coming away with a win."

The first half was nearly identical to C-N season opener. It took 17 minutes for the Eagles to get its first shot of the contest. Savannah Fields had a shot saved by Spring Hill's goalkeeper Jadelyn McNerney. Senior Addie Henry less than a minute later attempted a shot that was also saved. The Eagles would go on to record eight shots, six on goal, but could not get one past McNerney in the first half.

Things changed early in the second half. C-N was on the attack, as Fields sent a ball into the box, it was headed on by freshman Maja Bengtsson and it found the feet of Nellie Bryneus who sent a low shot past McNerney to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the 51st minute. Bryneus' goal was the seventh of her career.

C-N had several other excellent opportunities as the second half continued. The Eagles recorded 12 other shots, 4 more on goal, including Henry's chance in the 86th minute. From the top of the box, Henry drilled a shot that hit the left post.

Following Henry's shot off the post, ODU went on a counterattack. Panthers forward Ashley Story got behind the Eagles defense and beat C-N goalkeeper Laura Germes to tie the game at one in the 87th minute.

C-N's Selina Jud gave the Eagles one last chance, as she attempted a header that just went wide left in the final minute.

"Obviously still early in the season, so hopefully the team can learn to manage the game a bit better," Duffy said. "Also, we must finish some more of these chances if we are going to put teams away and make our lives a whole lot easier."

The Eagles outshot the Panthers 21-3 and 11-2 in shots on goal. Bryneus, Henry and Jud combined for 15 of those 21 shots and 10 of those 11 shots on goal. Fields and Bengtsson assisted on the Eagles lone goal.

Since Duffy took over at C-N, its just the fourth time the Eagles have tied their opponent when outshooting them.

Freshman Laura Germes made her college and Eagles debut in the net recording one save and playing all 90 minutes. McNerney recorded 10 saves in goal for ODU.

C-N recorded eight corners to Ohio Dominican's four. The Eagles gained 53 percent of the possession in the match.

With the tie, C-N continues its run of not having lost back-to-back games since the beginning of the 2018 season.

The Eagles now turn their attention to its home opener on Wednesday when it welcomes Young Harris to McCown field for a 5:00pm start.
