Eagles fall to Cedarville in season opener

CLEVELAND, Tenn.- Despite outshooting the Cedarville Yellow Jackets, the Carson-Newman women's soccer team dropped its season opener Thursday afternoon, 2-0. 

"Frustrating result, especially with all the great chances we created," Coach Simon Duffy said. "All in all, Cedarville was better than us on the day. We must now show some character and react correctly in the game Saturday."

The first of many chances for C-N came in the 8th minute off the foot of graduate student Sanne Martinsen, but the attempt was saved by Cedarville's goalkeeper Brooke Ackley who had a busy and impressive afternoon. Cedarville took the lead in the 22nd minute, as good passing led to an Olivia Hoffman goal to put the Yellow Jackets ahead. 

The Eagles would have four other shots saved in the 1st half by Ackley. C-N totaled up nine shots in the first half. 

Duffy's group stayed aggressive into the second half, as freshman Maja Bengtsson had a shot saved once again by Ackley, this time in the 65th minute. C-N kept its aggressive play up as freshman Anita Arnadottir and sophomore Nellie Bryneus both had shots on goal, five minutes apart that were once again saved by Ackley. 

After those two opportunites, Cedarville pounced on an opportunity as Megan McClish found Mary Kate Wyer in the 86th minute to push the Yellow Jackets lead to 2-0, as they would hold on.

Ackley recorded 10 saves in goal for Cedarville. 

The Eagles outshot the Yellow Jackets 16-13. Junior Jenna Rehm made her C-N debut in goal recording four saves. 

20 different players saw time on the pitch in the season opener for C-N. 10 of the 20 players that saw aciton recorded a shot. Bryneus led the team in shots with three, all of which were on goal. 

Addie Henry, Carina Wust, Martinsen and Bengtsson all recorded two shots a piece. 

Under Duffy, the Eagles have now been outscored 10-6 in season openers. C-N loses for just the seventh time under Duffy when his team outshoots the opponent. 

The Eagles turn their attention to a matchup with Ohio Dominican on Saturday morning 11:00 am kickoff in Cleveland, Tenn.
