C-N opens home slate tomorrow against Young Harris

Match Notes

Simon Duffy Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman (0-1-1) welcomes Young Harris (0-2) for the 2022 home opener.

C-N's lone goal scored in the first two matches is by sophomore Nellie Bryneus. She scored in the 51st minute against Ohio Dominican. Freshman Maja Bengtsson and junior Savannah Fields were each credited with the assist.

Despite just the one goal in the first 180:00 minutes of the season, the Eagles have had plenty of opportunities. As a team, C-N has attempted 37 shots, with 21 of those shots on goal. Senior forward Addie Henry leads the group with eight shots, Bryenus (7) and freshman Selina Jud (6) follow close behind.

"Unfortunately, there is no magic recipe to putting the ball in the back of the net, it's the hardest thing to do in the game," Coach Simon Duffy said. "I'd be in a different scenario, if we weren't creating chances, if we weren't creating runs off the ball to make some space or an opportunity. The chances are there, we just need to have a bit more calmness about us in front of goal, because we have the players that have the ability to put the ball in the back of the net."

Coach Duffy has utilized two goalkeepers in the first two matches. Junior Jenna Rehm started the season opener, allowing two goals and recorded four saves. Freshman Laura Germes started Saturday against Ohio Dominican, allowing one goal and recorded one save.

Under Duffy, C-N holds a 16-6 scoring margin in home openers. Also, under Duffy at home, the Eagles are 32-7-4 and have outscored opponents 110-41 since 2017.

Young Harris opened the 2022 campaign with a pair of home losses. The Mountain Lions fell to Wingate 1-0 in the season opener and then 2-1 to Tusculum on Sunday. All three goals allowed have been in the second half.

Freshman midfielder Alexis Scarpinato has the only goal for Young Harris this season. The Mountain Lions will have one more non-conference match before beginning PBC play.

"Just a very dogged team, they're going to be tough," Duffy said. "The big thing is, is we are at home. We've been on the road the last few games, so I'm hopeful we can bring how we typically play at home and that energy tomorrow."

Tomorrow marks the sixth meeting between the two teams. C-N leads the series 3-2 and is undefeated (2-0) in home matches against Young Harris. The two teams met in Young Harris, Ga last year with the Mountain Lions taking the match 2-0.

The match will kick off at 5:00 p.m. Be certain to follow Carson-Newman athletics on twitter at @cn_eagles for live updates.
