Balanced attack leads C-N to third straight victory

EMORY, Va.- Carson-Newman (4-2-2, 3-1) used a strong and balanced offensive attack to defeat Emory & Henry (2-5, 0-4) Wednesday evening, 6-0.

The win marks the eight consecutive year the Eagles have won at least three games in a row.

"Delighted to see that we continued where we left off against Wingate", Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "The players came out focused and moved the ball very very well. 

The Eagles scored their first goal off a set piece in the 10th minute, with two freshmen combining for the first goal. Off a free kick, Felicia Frick took the nearside pass and sent a cross into the six-yard box where Selina Jud put it past Natalie Capone to put C-N ahead 1-0. The goal was her second of the year.

Between C-N's first goal and its second, the Eagles fired 12 shots before getting its next goal. In the 36th minute the Eagles drew a corner kick. The Wasps struggled to clear the ball, and senior Sanne Martinsen took advantage scoring her third goal of the season to put C-N up 2-0. The Athens native has now scored in back-to-back games.

In the 40th minute, after another corner kick, the Eagles were fouled in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Frick took the PK and sent it past Capone to put the Eagles up 3-0 at halftime. The goal was Frick's first of her career.

C-N picked up where it left off in the first half. In the 56th minute, Jud sent a beautiful ball behind the Wasps defense where sophomore Nellie Bryneus was on the other to end to boot home the Eagles fourth goal. 

In the 80th minute, Senior Addie Henry got involved in the attack as she fired a shot from outside the box into the back of the net for C-N's fifth goal.

The Eagles sixth and final goal came in the 87th minute from Jud once again on a quality pass from Henry. 

C-N has had two different players score two goals in back-to-back games. The Eagles six goals are the most since the March 3, 2021 when it scored six against Mars Hill.

E & H's only shot came in the 58th minute off the foot of Sophie Graham. 

C-N outshot E & H 33-1 and 15-0 for shots on goal.  

C-N recorded season highs in goals (6), shots (33), shots on goal (15) and corner kicks (10. 

Under Duffy, the Eagles are now 20-5-2 on the road against the SAC.

Carson-Newman returns to McCown field Saturday when Coker comes to Mossy Creek for a noon kickoff.
