C-N battles Nova Southeastern Saturday at McCown field

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman (1-1-1) looks to build off its first win of the season as it welcomes Nova Southeastern (1-0) to Mossy Creek for a Saturday evening non-conference matchup.

The Eagles got its first win of the season thanks to a strong second half surge past Young Harris on Wednesday. Freshman Maja Bengtsson got the scoring started in the 53rd minute when she fired a left footed shot in the upper right corner to give the Eagles the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Bengtsson's first career goal.

As the second half continued, the more the offense would pick up. C-N would score three more goals, all of which came in a five-minute stretch. Senior Addie Henry lifted a pass behind the Mountain Lions defense and Nellie Bryneus made a better run and touch and sent a shot in the bottom right corner to give the Eagles insurance. The goal put C-N up 2-0 in the 75th minute. Seniors Sanne Martinsen and Jente Kuper scored the third and fourth goals, respectively.

Bryneus leads C-N with two goals scored. Five different Eagles have recorded an assist through the first three matches. Henry leads the team in shots with 13. C-N is averaging 19 shots per contest.

Under Simon Duffy, C-N is 33-7-4 at home and have outscored opponents 114-41.

Nova Southeastern opened the season yesterday defeating King 2-0. Katharina Jullich and Luana Grabias scored the two goals for the Sharks. The goals came in the 86th and 88th minutes. As a team, the Sharks fired 27 shots, with 15 on goal.

The Sharks have been picked to finish 5th in the Sunshine State Conference Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll.

The Sharks return a pair of All-SSC team members in Loise Matsgard (first team) and Chama Silva (second team). Matsgard started all 16 games as a freshman and tied for the team lead with six goals, three game winners, and added two assists. Silva also started all 16 games, scoring five goals and led the team with four assists.

Nova Southeastern finished the 2021 season with an 8-7-1 record, finishing 3rd in the league and advanced to the SSC conference tournament in the program's first season under Head Coach James Moore.
