JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman women's soccer (3-2-2, 2-1) scored two first half goals to create separation and defeat Wingate (5-1-1, 1-1-1) 3-1.
It's back-to-back wins for the Eagles, with both wins coming against unbeaten teams. The Eagles extend their home unbeaten streak to eight games.
"I thought we picked a good game to score first half goals because that's a super team," Coach Simon Duffy said. "It's the best 45 minutes we've played this season."
Freshman Selina Jud scored the first one on a good cross from junior Abbie Zander to put C-N ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute. The goal was Jud's first career goal.
The Eagles scored their second goal off a deflection as sophomore Sydnee Duncan took advantage to put C-N up 2-0 in the 43rd minute. The goal was her first of the year. The Eagles entered the match with only one first half goal in their first six games.
C-N went into the half with the 2-0 advantage and added on to it. It was Duncan again who booted home the goal after the ball was deflected and not cleared by Wingate.
"Sydnee was great for us, Coach Duffy said. "She scored seven or eight goals last year and she always just puts herself in the right place and I'm so happy for her."
Less than thirty seconds later, Wingate drew a foul in the box setting up a penalty kick for the Bulldogs. Chandler Hendrix lined up the PK and had her shot saved by freshman goalkeeper Laura Germes. She made the diving stop ranging to her left, and the ball deflected out. The Bulldogs got possession back and fired a cross to Hendrix who put it past Germes on her second try to get Wingate on the board. Germes' saved penalty kick was the first time a C-N goalkeeper did so since Jackie Burns did it against Queens on November 12th of 2017.
The Eagles held on defensively in the final 20 minutes to secure their second conference win of the season.
Germes was spectacular in goal recording a career high five saves in the match.
With Duncan and Jud scoring the three goals, eight different Eagles have now combined to score the team's eleven goals.
The Eagles outshot the Bulldogs 14-11 and have now outshot their opponents in six of the seven matches.
Under Duffy, C-N improves to 20-4-1 against SAC opponents when playing at McCown field.
C-N returns to the pitch Wednesday, when it travels to take on Emory & Henry for a 5:00 p.m. kick off.
