CHARLESTON, S.C. - After winning the 2022 Battle at Hilton Head, the Carson-Newman women's golf team returns to the Lowcountry for the Low Tide Intercollegiate event in Charleston, S.C. on Feb. 28.
The Eagles are coming off their first win of the season, shooting ten-over in the second round at Hilton Head with a total score of 26-over, winning their second straight championship in the Lowcountry by three strokes over Wingate with a final score of 602. As a team, Carson-Newman carded 20 total birdies, the most of any team in the field. The Eagles also had the best average score on par fives, averaging a score of 5.25 and 10-over on the longest holes at the tournament.
Individually, Ellie Haughton (Lincolnshire, England) finished the weekend in third place after shooting one-over during the second round. The junior finished the tournament with a score of four-over to lead the Eagles. Haughton finished tied for fourth for the best average score on Par fives, averaging an even-par score of 5.00
Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland) recorded her third straight top-five finish, finishing tied for fourth overall after carding a five-over par 77 in the second round. Cummins finished the tournament at six-over for the week. Cummins had the second best score of the field on par fours, averaging one-over and a score of 4.05.
Caroline Nemes (Orlando, Fla.) did the most moving of any Eagle in the field after day one, soaring 30 spots to finish the week tied for tenth at nine-over. The freshman from Orlando carded a one-under par 71 on the final day of the tournament, one of just two athletes to shoot under-par in the second round.
The Eagles last competed at the Low Tide Intercollegiate during the 2021 season, finishing fifth. Carson-Newman shot their highest round of the week, a 27-over 312 score in the third round. The entire team accounted for five birdies in the final round but tacked on 39 bogeys with a week-low one hole higher than a bogey.
Individually, Matilda Frövenholt lead the team with a 13-over three round score of 229, finishing tied for 12th. That 229 total was a new career-best 54-hole score, beating her previous best of 230 at the 2019 Sunoco/Campbell Oil Classic by one stroke.
