Big final day moves Cummins to a tie for 36th in NCAA South Regional

DAVIE, Fla. - A big final round moved Maeve Cummins eight spot up the leaderboard to a tie for 36th on the final day of the NCAA South Regional.

Cummins finished the tournament with a final round three-over 74 on the last day, her lowest one-round score of the week. The senior carded her first birdie of the week on the first hole on the par four opening hole. She finished the front-nine with a one-over 37 after carding bogeys on the second and sixth holes.

Cummins finished the day on the back-nine with bogeys on the 13th and 16th holes, finishing the back-nine with a two-over 37. 

The Waringstown, Northern Ireland native ended the week with a 16-over 229. With the top two individuals advancing to the NCAA National Championships, Cummins finishes four strokes behind Ainsley Cowart from West Georgia for the third-best score of individuals in the regional. Hannah Stephenson of Lander finished with the best score of the indivdual qualifiers, finishing fifth with a one-over 221 for the week. 

Alice Gotbring of Barry won the individual region championship with a five-over 218. 

Shooting an average score of 3.17 and two-over on par threes this week, Cummins shot the 18th best score on the shortest holes at the Grande Oaks Golf Club. Her average score of 5.11 and one-over on par fives is tied for the 25th best score on the longest holes at the course in the sunshine state. 

Her 38 pars were tied for the second-most through three rounds of the tournament. 

Cummins' season ends with an average score of a three-over 74.8, the lowest season score of her career. Cummins currently holds the best career shooting average in program history, sitting ahead of teammate Ellie Haughton with a career average score of 75.8.

She finishes the season with five top-10 finishes, with a season-high fourth-place finish at the SAC Women's Golf Championship.

"I didn't get the result I wanted this week, but I really appreciated the help and support Coach Chris and Kelsey gave me all week," says Cummins. "They made the trip a bunch fun and a nice way to finish a hard-fought season."

The Carson-Newman women's golf team finishes the year with one event win, taking home the Battle at Hilton Head title for the second straight season. The Eagles reached as high as 18th overall in the Golfstat rankings and 20th in the WGCA coaches poll under first-year head coach Kelsey Hutson.
