INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the second time in her career, Maeve Cummins will represent the no. 18/20 Carson-Newman Eagles in the postseason, qualifying for the 2022 NCAA South Regional as an individual.
The senior out of Waringstown, Northern Ireland joins the individual group as the three-seed, behind Ainsley Cowart of West Georgia and Madeline Anathasane of North Georgia. Cummins is ahead of Hannah Stephenson from Lander, Hailey McLaughlin from Wingate and Megan Robb of Lenoir-Rhyne.
All participants will compete through the 54 holes of competition. The top-five teams along with the top two individuals not on an advancing team will advance to the national championships.
The national championships will be held May 10-14 at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Georgia. The number of participants that qualify for the finals is 98.
Cummins qualifies for the NCAA South Regional after another stellar season in the orange and blue. This season, Cummins has recorded four top-ten finishes for the Eagles, shooting an average score of a three-over 74.8. Her sixth-place finish at the Battle at Hilton Head helped the Eagles win the event championship for the second straight year. Cummins carded her first career hole in one at the Lady Bearcat Invitational earlier this year, en route to a 14th place finish.
The first-team All-SAC selection earned her second career top-five finish at the SAC Championships, shooting a one-over 73 in the final round of the tournament to finish the week with an overall score of a five-over 221. Cummins finished fourth overall in the tournament, guiding the Eagles to a third-place finish, recording a three-round score of a 45-over 909. That is the lowest team three-round score for Carson-Newman women's golf in tournament history.
This is Cummins second career trip to the NCAA South Regional. She last competed at the 2019 edition of the tournament held in Cleveland, Tenn.
As a freshman, she finished tied for 20th holding a 225 total. Cummins ended up three-shots away from grabbing a spot in the national final with her nine-over showing. Of the six individual berths in the tournament, she finished the highest on the leaderboard, separating herself by three shots.
Cummins holds the best finish in terms of both leaderboard placement and scoring of all individuals in program history to make it to the regional.
In the national Golfstat rankings, Cummins is currently ranked 33rd in all of Division-II women's golf.
Cummins and the rest of the field will compete at the 2022 NCAA Division-II women's golf South Regional at the Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie, Fla. beginning on May 2 and concluding on May 4.
