No. 17/18 women's golf looks to improve standing at Lady Bearcat Invitational

GREENWOOD, S.C. - With one tournament left in the regular season, the no. 17/18 Carson-Newman women's golf team heads to the Palmetto State for the third time this spring, competing at the Lady Bearcat Invitational at Lander University.

The two-round tournament will consist of 18 holes of play beginning on Monday, Mar. 28 at the Greenwood Country Club. 

C-N is coming off of a second place finish at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn. The Eagles shot a 27-over 311 in the second round, finishing the tournament with a 41-over 609. That score passes Eastern Kentucky's 36-hole score of 620 in 2015 for the third-best score in Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate history. 

As a team, Carson-Newman finished with the third-best score on par fives for the week, shooting seven-over and an average score of 5.14. The Eagles carded the second-most pars on the weekend as a team with 101. Ellie Haughton and Maeve Cumminscombined for 47 of those, the third and fourth most of any individuals in the field. 

This is the third trip to South Carolina for Carson-Newman this season, where the team has been successful. Their last time in the state, the Eagles finished fourth at the Low Tide Intercollegiate. As a team, Carson-Newman recorded the second best score on par threes, shooting nine-over for an average score of 3.15. The Eagles finished the tournament with the second-most birdies, carding 30 over three rounds. Aynsleigh Martin and Hannah Holland combined for half of those, with Martin leading C-N with eight birdies, the second-most on the weekend. Holland recorded seven birdies over three rounds.

Haughton and Cummins finished tied for fifth place at the Low Tide Intercollegiate event. Cummins shot a four-over 76 in her final round while Haughton shot an even-par 72 to both finish the week with an eight-over 224. 

The Eagles opened the spring season in the Palmetto State, winning the Battle at Hilton Head championship for the second straight year. C-N shot ten-over on the day to card a second round score of 298. The Eagles finished the two day tournament with a total score of 26-over, winning their second straight championship in the Lowcountry by three strokes over Wingate with a final score of 602

Haughton (Lincolnshire, England) finished the weekend in third place after shooting one-over during the second round. The junior finished the tournament with a score of four-over to lead the Eagles. Haughton finished tied for fourth for the best average score on Par fives, averaging an even-par score of 5.00.
