Resende Advances to Semifinals, Chornei stays alive in Consolation Bracket

SUMTER, S.C. - Ana Carla Resende moves onto the semifinals for the second year in a row after a magisterial win over the number eight seed.

Resende is the final Eagle standing for the men's and women's tennis teams as she hopes to make it into the finals match at the ITA Regionals for the second consecutive year.

Resende was matched against the number eight seeded Eryka Kruk of Flagler College. Kruk had not lost a set before her matchup with Resende. Resende was relentless against Kruk, winning in sets of 6-1 and 6-1.

Resende moves on to play the number two seed in Nadja Meier. Meier has yet to lose a set in this tournament but has played in three separate overtime matches.

Natasha Forrest and Resende competed against Dana Heimen and Nadja Meier (1) in the quarterfinals of the doubles action. Meier and Heimen won the match 8-5.

Heimen and Meier kept winning in the semifinals with a score of 8-5. The duo was scheduled to face off against Luisa Hrda and Eryka Kruk (2) in the final.

Hrda and Kruk won the match due to an injury Heimen suffered Sunday evening in singles action. Hrda and Kruk took home the ITA Regionals first-place doubles title.

Resende is not the only Eagle that is left competing. Anita Chornei advances into the round of 16 in the consolation bracket after her victory against Millie Elsborg.

Chornei won the first set 6-4. Elsborg would bounce back against the Eagle, winning the second set 4-6. The third set was the longest of the tournament up to this point. Chornei advances after a 10-8 overtime set in an absolute dogfight of a match.

Chornei advances to compete against Rhidaim Yang of Lees-McRae College. The time of this match has yet to be determined.

On the men's side, Marnix Van Dalen also advances to the round of 16 in the consolation bracket after his victory against Rufus Plane. Van Dalen won the first set 6-1 but lost in the second 6-2. He was able to overcome in the final set 10-7.

Van Dalen will compete against Hugo Nossler in the round of 16 consolation bracket.  

The women's singles semifinals action shapes out as such: Luisa Hrda (1) will face Zulay Castaneda (4) at 10:30 A.M. on Monday. Resende (3) will compete against Meier (2) at 10:30 A.M.

Hrda entered as the number one seed for the second straight year. Last year, Hrda won first place after defeating Resende 6-3 and 7-6 (3) in the finals match.
