Eagles Drop Tight Contest Against Catawba

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman women's tennis (0-6) begins conference play with a loss against Catawba College (3-0) on Saturday, Mar. 4th.

"I am proud of how the women's team is growing and fighting for each other," head coach Felipe Charry said. "Each match, we are getting closer."

Doubles

Julia Speiser and Natasha Forrest lined up against Vicky Beardsley and Alexandra Parra in the game's opening doubles set. The Eagles duo won the set 6-3 to win their first doubles match as a pair this season.

Mollie Edge and Summer Reeves paired up for the first time this season when they competed against Carolina Correia and Sofia Hernandez. The Catawba College Catawba Indians won the set 6-4.

Carson-Newman forfeited the third doubles set, ultimately costing the Eagles the doubles point.

Singles

Anita Chornei remained in the one spot for the Eagles for the fourth time this season. Chornei dropped the first game against Mya Ami but was able to rally in the second to win 6-3. Ami pulled away 6-4 in the final game to win the set.

Forrest lined up against Parra in the two-spot. Forrest overcame Parra in consecutive 6-3 games to win the point. Forrest advanced to 4-2 on the year, including a 3-1 record in the two spot.

Speiser matched up against Matilde Moretti in the three spot. Moretti won in games of 7-5 and 6-3.

Reeves lined up against Vaishnavi Venkatesh in the four. Reeves lost the first game 6-4 but bounced back in the second to win 6-4. Reeves pulled away in the third to win the set 10-8.

Edge saw Sofia Hernandez in the five spot. Hernandez ran away with the first game 6-1, but Edge squeezed out a 7-6 second game to level the score. Edge went on to win the final game 7-5 to secure the Eagles' third point.

Carson-Newman forfeited the final singles matchup, giving Catawba their third singles point and the 4-3 victory.

Carson-Newman returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 8th, in Hickory, N.C., to take on Lenoir-Rhyne.
