Postseason Hopes Remain Alive for Women's Tennis

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman women's tennis (4-12, 4-7 South Atlantic Conference) wins their third straight match after defeating Mars Hill University (7-11, 3-7 SAC) 5-2 on Tuesday.

"The women improved their doubles game, which gave them an extra boost of confidence that translates to singles play," head coach Felipe Charry said.

The win keeps the Eagles' postseason hopes alive with just one game remaining. The top eight teams will compete in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament starting on Apr. 20th.

Doubles

Summer Reeves and Mollie Edge lined up to take on Amanda Kadiri and Elana Mackey to start action against Mars Hill. The Eagles won 6-4 to mark their fourth straight doubles victory.

Natasha Forrest and Julia Speiser took down Ines Rodriguez and Kate Brzostek 6-1. Forrest and Speiser are 8-2 when working together this season.

Carson-Newman forfeited the final doubles set but clinched the doubles point after winning two of the three sets.

The Eagles have won the doubles point in four of the last five matches after starting the season 1-9 in doubles action. Charry's squad is 4-1 when winning the doubles point.

Singles

Forrest lined up in the two spot for the 13th time this season to take on Kadiri. Forrest captured the first set 7-3 before shutting out her opponent 6-0 in the second set. Forrest's 6-0 second-set victory marks her first bagel of the year.

Speiser defeated Brzostek 7-5 and 6-3 to mark her 22nd career victory. Speiser is 5-11 this year, including four conference victories.

Reeves dropped her first set against Rodriguez 6-2 but was able to rally in the second set 6-2. Reeves won the final set 6-2. Reeves is second on the team with ten singles victories.

Edge extended her team-high four-game win streak by defeating Maria Razzetta 6-4 and 6-2. Edge is 7-7 this season despite starting the year 3-7.

Elana Mackey handed Carson-Newman their only losing matchup of the day when she defeated Anita Chornei 6-1 and 7-5.

The Eagles forfeited the sixth matchup.

Carson-Newman sits eighth in the SAC standings, just ahead of Lincoln Memorial (8-10, 3-7 SAC) and Coker (4-12, 3-7 SAC). The Eagles need to win their final game and hope Lincoln Memorial loses one of its two remaining games to qualify for the SAC tournament.

Carson-Newman will play in what could be their most meaningful game of the season when they take on Newberry (13-3, 8-2 SAC) on Saturday at 1:00  P.M. in the season finale.

The Railsplitters play UVA-Wise (7-9, 1-9 SAC) on Wednesday before ending the season against Lenoir-Rhyne (10-9, 6-4 SAC) on Friday.
