Eagles Drop Match Against Lander Despite Strong Singles Play

GREENWOOD, S.C. - Carson-Newman's women's tennis (0-2) drops their match against Lander University (3-1) in a tightly contested 4-3 match on Saturday, Feb. 13th.

The Eagles failed to win a doubles match on the day, giving Lander University the early one-point lead. Natasha Forrest, Anita Chornei, and Julia Speiser were the victorious Eagles of the day.

Doubles: Lander 3, C-N 0

Summer Reeves and Natasha Forrest lined up in the number one spot for the Eagles. The duo faced off against Mille Elsborg and Emily Ineson. The Bearcats won the set 6-3.

Maria Ulloa and Julia Speiser dropped their set 6-0 against Lander's Sina Ablersmeier and Chiara Gerbino.

Mollie Edge and Anita Chornei showed strong efforts for the Eagles in the three spot. The pair could not get over the final lump, losing 7-6 against Fe Batoon and Hanna Panchal.

Singles: Lander 3, C-N 3

Forrest lined up in the one spot for the Eagles for the second week in a row. Albersmeier won the first set 6-3, but Forrest was able to rally to win the second set 6-3. Forrest pulled away in the tiebreaker to win 10-8.

Chornei lined up in the two spot against Gerbino. Chornei cruised to a first-set victory with a score of 6-2. Gerbino fought back in the second set to win 7-6. Chornei took home the point after a 1-0 tiebreaking set.

Reeves dropped her singles match against Mille Elsborg playing the three spot. Elsborg won in sets of 6-3 and 6-1.

Ulloa faced off against Maranda Adair in the four spot. Adair won in sets of 6-2 and 6-3.

Speiser won her set in the five spot against Lander's Ineson. Speiser won in back-to-back sets with scores of 6-2.

Mollie Edge filled into the six spot for the Eagles against Hanna Panchal. Panchal won in sets of 6-3 and 6-4.

The Eagles move on to play Lees-McRae on Saturday, Feb. 18th, in Harrogate, Tenn., at Lincoln Memorial University's Indoor Tennis Complex. Carson-Newman has not begun a spring season 0-3 since the 2017 season when the Eagles finished the year 8-10.
