C-N enters final day of Cougar Invitational in 5th place

COLUMBUS, Ga.- Carson-Newman men's golf is tied for 5th entering the final 18 holes of action at the Cougar Invitational.

"Aside from that one real nice round by Hayden Hunneke, I was disappointed in our day," Carson-Newman men's golf coach Randy Wylie said. "Overall, first round was okay, but the second round was poor. We currently have a lot of new guys in the lineup and we just need to figure out our chemistry and get our mindset right. I'm very confident in their ability, we just need to get our mental game together and we'll be good."

The Eagles came out firing in round one. In his first action with C-N, graduate student Hayden Hunneke fired a 3-under 67. He made five birdies in the round, all of which were made on par fours.

Fellow newcomer Luke Stock scored an opening round 1-over 71. The junior made two birdies in the opening round on holes 2 and 12.

Sophomore Elliot MacGregor used a strong back nine to finish with a 2-over 72. He shot a 3-under 32 on the back nine. It was a bogey free back nine, to go along with the three birdies.

Graduate student Jake Mynatt made two birdies in round one to finish with a 3-over 73. Junior Aidan Powter made four birdies in the opening round but made two double bogeys as well. He finished with a 4-over 74. Each C-N golfer recorded a birdie on hole 12, a 359-yard par four.

Following the first eighteen holes, C-N was in a tie for second place.

MacGregor stayed consisten for the Eagles as her scored another 2-over 72. He made four more birdies in round two, with two of those birdies coming on par threes. He is tied for 11th entering the final round.

Hunneke went 4-over on each nine to finish his day with an 8-over 78. He made one birdie in the second round. He enters the final day tied for 15th.

Stock also made just one birdie in the second round and finished with a 5-over 75. The Oxted, England native enters the final 18 holes tied for 17th.

Mynatt scored an 8-over 78 in the second round, despite two more birdies.

Powter followed in with a 9-over 79. He birdied holes 1 and 7 in the second round.

The Eagles added twenty more strokes from their first to second round scores. They enter the final 18 holes trailing first place Anderson by 25 strokes.

As a team, Carson-Newman played the par threes better than any other team going 3-over.

Playing as an individual, freshman Ben Johnston shot an 8-over 78 and an 11-over 81.
