Loaded field awaits C-N at Hurricane Invitational

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After a third-place finish to begin the spring season, No. 20 Carson-Newman strives to continues its early spring success as it heads down to Albany, Georgia for the Hurricane Invitational tomorrow and Tuesday.

This marks the fourth consecutive spring season in which head coach Randy Wylie will take his group to compete at Doublegate Country Club. The course is just over 7,000 yards and is a par 72. The 54-hole event starts with 36 holes tomorrow, before the final round on Tuesday morning.

Last season, Carson-Newman led after day one of the Hurricane Invitational. The Eagles slid back two spots, finishing in third place last season, just three strokes back of first place. The third-place finish was two spots better than their finish in 2021 and 2020, when the team finished 5th.

Once again, this tournament features a loaded field, with 7 of the 16 teams competing ranked inside the top 20 of the Bushnell/Golfweek coaches poll. No.20 Carson-Newman is joined at the Hurricane Invitational by No. 1 Anderson, No. 7 Nova Southeastern, No. 9 North Georgia, No. 11 Tampa, the host, No. 12 Georgia Southwestern and No. 13 Clayton State.  North Georgia is the defending champion, holding off Georgia Southwestern last season by a single stroke.

Participating as a team for C-N this week will be Hayden Hunneke, Jake Mynatt, Luke Stock, Aidan Powter and Antonio Farinella. Elliot MacGregor will compete as an individual.

Hunneke began his spring season with three consecutive under par rounds to secure a third place finish at the Saint Leo Invitational. Mynatt finished right behind his fellow graduate student, finishing in 5th place after going 7-under par for three rounds to begin the spring. He is the only Eagle that played in this event last season. The graduate student finished 4-over par for the tournament, good for a top-35 finish.

Stock finished just 3-over par in his first tournament this spring, highlighted by his opening round 3-under 69. After playing in just one tournament during the fall season, Powter will compete at his second straight event and third total in his C-N career. The junior progressed with each round to open the spring season, shaving at least three strokes off his initial round score.

Farinella will make his C-N debut this week. The redshirt junior has not competed in an event with the Eagles in his first few seasons in Mossy Creek. His scoring average in high school was 72.1, which earned him first-team all-state honors.

MacGregor will look to build off a solid end to his spring season. After struggling in his first two rounds, the sophomore battled back to card a 3-over 75 in the final round of the Saint Leo Invitational.

Tomorrow's action gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at this link:
