Brugmans sets new school record at JDL College Team Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Carson-Newman is leaving the JDL College Team Challenge with four first-place finishes.

Carson-Newman track and field kicked off the weekend with four first-place finishes and numerous spots on the podium.

"We went to JDL to gain experience and get better. Many did that tonight. People like Katie Smock, Morgan Stanton, Colten Lee, and Raymond Brugmans showed up and won their event. Raymond set a new school record in the 800-meter today, and we are proud of his efforts and performance," head coach for the track and field team David Needs said.

The Eagles swept gold in the 3000-meter event. Katie Smock finished in first with a finals time of 10:51.26. On the men's side, Colten Lee took the win in 8:44.22.

In the men's 800-meter dash, Raymond Brugmans finished in 1:56.69 for another first-place finish for the Eagles. Brugmans beat the Carson-Newman track and field record for the event. Christian Henry placed sixth in the event with his 1:58.30-second performance. Morgan Stanton won gold in the women's high jump with her 1.54-meter clearance. KJ Kemp finished third in the men's high jump with a 1.89-meter clearance.

"We also like seeing people like Christian Henry and Abbie Zander who continue to show their consistency throughout the season," Needs said.

KJ Laribo ran the 400-meter dash in 51.36 for sixth place in the event. On the women's side, Abbie Zander finished fourth 1:00.16. Lauren Tabor finished in fifth place in 1:02.08.

In the women's one-mile race, Grace Lathrop placed fifth in 5:32.52. In the men's 60-meter dash, Tshenelo Lemao placed fourth in 7.03 seconds.

"It will be a busy weekend for us, but I am so proud of the team and the leadership of our coaches up to this point," Needs said.

The rest of the Eagle crew will compete tomorrow in the two-day Division II Pre-Nationals Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11.
