Off to a strong start, Eagles find the podium early in the weekend

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman track and field kicked off the busy weekend with spots on the podium. 

Makanakaishe Charamba placed second in the men's 200-meter dash at the Tennessee Invite earlier this afternoon. He ran the event in 20.49 seconds and was followed closely by Devon Moore who placed third in 20.84. Both Eagles set personal records in the event and were only bested by Javonte Harding of the University of Tennessee who won gold with a time of 20.42. Siphosethu Boya placed 16th for the Eagles in 21.83.

In the women's 200-meter dash, Sade De Sousa placed sixth in 24.54. De Sousa set a new personal record and was the first Division II athlete to finish the race. 

In the men's long jump event, Courtavious Garrett snagged silver with a 7.16-meter leap. Camden Fritz recorded a season best performance with a 6.76-meter jump that afforded him 12th in the event. On the women's side of the event, Kadidja Sangare placed seventh with a personal best jump of 5.92 meters. Sydney McCarty set a season best with her 5.84-meter leap and ninth-place finish in the event. 

In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Morgan Bailey placed 15th in 1:11.49, and Colten Lee placed 16th in the men's 5,000-meter run in 15:09.13. 

The Eagles also found success at the first day of the Flames Invitational. 

Dawson Jones placed 13th in the men's 200-meter dash with a finals time of 21.93. Tshenelo Lemao finished 19th in 22.09. 

In the women's 1,000-meter race, Katie Smock grabbed an eighth-place finish in 38:23.84. 

Ian Salyer finished eighth in the men's discus throw with a 39.62-meter mark. Salyer also placed 18th in the men's hammer throw with a 35.48-meter mark, while teammate Matthew Campbell finished 14th with a mark of 37.72.
