Charamba named Men's Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS, La.- Carson-Newman track and field athlete Makanakaishe Charamba was named the NCAA DII Men's Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Thursday, July 13. 

The 2023 USTFCCCA Track & Field Academic Awards were released last week and honor student-athletes who excelled in both the classroom and on the track and field. The awards are distributed by division. 

Charamba was recognized as the Men's Track Scholar Athlete of the Year for his performance during the outdoor season. Along with this honor, Charamba has been named the USTFCCCA National Track Athlete of the Year and USTFCCCA Southeast Region Track Athlete of the Year to conclude his noticibly successful outdoor season. 

Charamba holds two national championship titles from his outdoor season with the Eagles. He won gold in the 200-meter dash in 20.19 seconds, making him the third-fastest athlete in the event in NCAA DII history. Charamba went on to win the 100-meter dash in 10.02. The sprinter also competed with teammates Devon Moore, Dawson Jones, and Siphosethu Boya in the men's 4x100-meter relay where the team placed second in 39.33 seconds. 

Charamba earned seven first-place finishes over the course of the season including two SAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships gold medals in the 100 and 200. He won SAC Men's Track Athlete of the Meet for his performance.
