Eagles claim spots atop the podium at the Electric City Invitational

ANDERSON, S.C.- Provisional qualifying marks represent Carson-Newman track and field's trip to the Electric City Invitational.

Carson-Newman track and field left Anderson University with gold medals and provisional qualifying marks this weekend.

"It was a great meet to improve marks. Anderson has a quality track and runs a high quality meet," head track and field coach David Needs said.

Abby Owens stood atop the podium for her first-place finish in the women's pole vault this afternoon, April 15. Owens had a 3.74-meter performance in the event, securing a provisional qualifying mark for national competition. Marlee Baker also competed in the event, and she placed seventh with a 2.65-meter mark.

"For Abby and Ashwin, it is always good to get provisional qualifying marks," Needs said.

Ashwin Jood won gold in the men's 400-meter dash in 47.33 seconds. His time recorded another provisional qualifying mark for the Eagles. Jood now holds the Carson-Newman track and field program record in the 400-meter dash. The previous record stood since 1976 when Larry Cook ran the event in 47.40 seconds.

In the women's long jump, Sydney McCarty placed second with a 5.65-meter leap. Brooke Taylor finished eighth for the Eagles with a 5.22-meter mark. Courtavious Garrett placed second on the men's side of the event. He recorded a 7.14-meter jump.

Morgan Stanton competed in the women's high jump and placed third with a 1.55-meter mark. Raymond Brugmans represented the Eagles in the 3,000-meter steeplechase where he finished fifth in 10:08.51.

"I am appreciative of the athletes that competed today and their coaches," Needs said.
