C-N Track and Field start season strong in Salem, Va.

SALEM, Va.- Eagles start the 2022-23 indoor season with a slew of first place finishes and provisional marks in the Bast-Cregger Invitational.

Carson-Newman track and field participated in their first meet of the indoor season this weekend at the Bast-Cregger Invitational hosted by Roanoke College.

On the women's side of the meet, Morgan Stanton placed first in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters. Abby Owens finished first place in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 3.60 meters.

Carson-Newman swept the podium in the women's long jump as Kadidja Sangare finished first with 5.68 meters, a provisional qualifying time for nationals. Sydney McCarty (5.54 m) and Brooke Taylor (5.29 m) finished second and third respectively.

Sade Desouza came in second in the women's 60-meter run with a time of 7.43 seconds, a provisional qualifying time. Janaya Davis-Gainer followed shortly behind finishing in third place in 7.82 seconds. Tytiana Wilson finished sixth in the event with a time of 7.92 seconds.

Katie Smock competed in the women's 5000-meter run and finished first with a time of 18:47.45. Smock's quickest split in the event was 42.47 seconds.

For the men, Shane Connell placed first in the high jump with a clearance of 1.98 meters, and Oluwafemi Richards came in second with the same clearance. Jackson Bostick was another top-10 finish for the Eagles with a clearance of 1.78 meters in the event.

Matthew Blackmon secured a provisional qualifying time and finished first in the men's 60-meter hurdles finals with a time of 8.19 seconds.

In the men's 60-meter run prelims, Makanakaishe Charamba finished second with a time of 6.91 seconds. Tshenelo Lemao (7.00), Courtavious Garrett (7.01), and Dawson Jones (7.03) finished sixth, seventh, and tenth respectively.

In the finals for the event, Tshenelo Lemao finished in fifth place for the Eagles with a time of 7.05 seconds.

Courtavious Garrett found first-place in the long jump with 7.14 meters. He also placed first in the men's triple jump with a 14.74 meter mark. Garrett recieved two provisional marks in the events, and these times mark his new personal bests in indoor competition. 

"We knew that this was the first meet. What we wanted to get accomplished was to shake the rust off. We were very pleased with where we were, and we had five provisional marks from four kids. We look forward to continuing the season and seeing growth along the way," Carson-Newman head track and field coach David Needs said.
