Owens named Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas- Carson-Newman women's track and field athlete Abby Owens was honored in the 2022-2023 Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-America Teams as selected by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) this afternoon.

Owens, a senior pole vaulter for the Eagles from Ocala, Fla., joined the Academic All-America Division II women's track & field/cross country teams as a repeat selection this Wednesday, June 28. Joining 16 other athletes, Owens was named a Second-Team Academic All-American for her performance this year.

Owens is a senior who double majored in math and philosophy, and she maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout the 2022-2023 year. Owens recently earned CSC Academic All-District status, and she was named the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. During the indoor season, Owens earned the 2023 SAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Wealth Enhancement Group Elite 23 Award for her academic prowess.

Aside from academic achievement, Owens won two conference championship titles during her senior year with the Eagles. She placed first in the pole vault with a 3.78-meter mark during the 2023 SAC Outdoor Championships besting her gold-medal performance of 3.68 meters during the indoor championships. Owens has eight first place finishes on the season.

Carson-Newman women's track and field adds an Academic All-American to the list of achievements during the 2022-2023 season. The Eagles concluded the year ranked fourth in the conference.
