Eight Eagles land spots at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships

PUEBLO, Colo.- Eight Carson-Newman track and field athletes were selected to compete at the 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships beginning Thursday, May 25. 

Selections for the 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships were released this afternoon, May 16, with eight Carson-Newman track and field athletes listed to compete. The full selection list can be found HERE. The championships will extend over three days beginning Thursday, May 25 at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo. 

The 2023 DII Outdoor Track & Field Championship selections mark the 17th straight time that Carson-Newman track and field has attended a national championship meet. The Eagles have not missed a national championship since 2015 and have sent 69 qualifiers to chase All-American status. 

Carson-Newman women's track and field will send three athletes to the outdoor championships this year. Sydney McCarty and Kadidja Sangare will compete in the women's long jump on Thursday, May 25 at 2:30 p.m. Sade De Sousa will race in the women's 100-meter dash prelims at 6:10 p.m. the same day. 

"Sydney was on the bubble, so we weren't sure if she would make it to the meet until today. For her to accomplish that is really awesome, and I'm proud of all three women that are traveling to nationals," head track and field coach David Needs said. 

Carson-Newman men's track and field is set to send five athletes to the meet. Dawson Jones, Devon Moore, Siphosethu Boya, and Makanakaishe Charamba will race in the 4x100-meter dash prelims on Thursday, May 25 at 5:00 p.m. Boya will race again during the first day of nationals with teammate Ashwin Jood in the men's 400-meter dash prelims. The event is set to begin at 5:55 p.m. 

Charamba and Moore will both compete in the men's 100 and 200 prelim events. The men's 100-meter dash prelims will begin at 6:25 p.m. on Thursday, May 25. The 200-meter dash prelims will take place on Friday, May 26 at 5:45 p.m. 

"We feel good. This is always an exciting time, and for some of our athletes, this may be it for them. We want to make the most of every opportunity, and we certainly want to make the most of this trip to Pueblo. These athletes have worked hard, and it is just really cool to see them make it to this point and compete at this level," Needs said. 

Carson-Newman track and field is headed to the 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships from Thursday, May 25 to Saturday, May 27 in Pueblo, Colo. The full meet schedule can be found HERE. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
