Jood grabs gold at Mount Olive Final Qualifier

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.- Carson-Newman track and field's Ashwin Jood won gold in the men's 400-meter dash at the Mount Olive Final Qualifier this afternoon, May 14.

Jood placed first in the men's 400 this afternoon with a 46.93-second personal best performance. Jood's performance moves him to 17th in Division II in the event.

"Not only did Ashwin run a personal best today, but his performance should get him into nationals based on the fact that they regularly take the top-20 in each event during the outdoor season," head track and field coach David Needs said.

Along with Jood, Sydney McCarty and Courtavious Garrett competed at the meet and represented the Eagles in field events.

Garrett finished third in the men's triple jump with a 13.80-meter performance, while teammate McCarty placed second in the women's long jump with a 5.74-meter leap.

"While Sydney and Courtavious didn't improve their marks, they should be commended for their effort and dedication. Like Ashwin, they competed yesterday and drove 6 1/2 hours to compete today too," Needs said.

The 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships selections will take place on Tuesday, May 16.

"We have several athletes on the bubble, and we will have to wait until Tuesday to see who makes it when the field is announced. I want to note, though, that this year the program set a record by having 25 qualifying marks. The season isn't over yet, but I am so incredibly proud of our team and what they have been able to accomplish so far this outdoor season," Needs said.

Carson-Newman track and field will compete again at the 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships beginning Thursday, May 25 at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
