Gold medals during day one of the Montreat College Challenge

MONTREAT, N.C.- Carson-Newman track and field kicked off the weekend with two first-place finishes.

Kadidja Sangare won gold in the women's long jump event this afternoon with a 6.03-meter leap. Sydney McCarty followed closely behind to snag second with a 5.81-meter mark. Brooke Taylor rounded out the top five in the event (5.48m), and Brooke Visser came in seventh (5.19m). Susan Nelson finished 10th with a 4.84-meter jump.

On the men's side of the event, Camden Fritz placed 10th with his 6.37-meter performance.

Abby Owens won the women's pole vault event. She recorded a 3.65-meter mark. Matthew Bretscher placed third in the men's pole vault with a 3.90-meter mark in the event.

The Eagles are back in action at 9:30 a.m. for the second day of the Montreat College Challenge as well as the Lee Invitational beginning at 10:00 a.m.
