C-N Track and Field with new records after day one of VMI Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va.- Eagles with multiple standouts in day one of the VMI Invitational.

"We had a number of standouts today, one of which was winning the men's DMR with one of the best times in school history," Carson-Newman head track and field coach David Needs said.

The Eagles ran the men's 4000-meter distance medley in 10:27.92 earlier this afternoon to secure a first-place finish. The men also found success in the 60-meter run as Makanakaishe Charamba finished first in the prelims (6.85) and semis (6.84) beating his own season best twice on the night.

Matthew Blackmon earned an NCAA provisional mark and personal record in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.17 seconds. His efforts earned him second place in the prelims for the event.

On the women's side, Kadidja Sangare also acquired a national provisional mark in the 60-meter hurdles by securing bronze in the event with a prelims time of 8.85 seconds. Her efforts resulted in a new personal record in the event.

"One of the ways we consistently measure success is by personal bests. We had many of those today, too, like Morgan Stanton in the high jump," Needs said.

Stanton tied for third in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.58 meters, a new personal record.

Janaya Davis-Gainer secured a personal record in the 60-meter prelims with a time of 7.79 seconds and a fourth-place finish. Sade De Sousa placed first in the women's prelims for the event with a time of 7.48. De Sousa also won the women's 60-meter semis in 7.45 seconds, and Tytiana Wilson secured a top-10 finish in the semis with a new personal best of 7.85 seconds.

"Today was a great start to the weekend with performances we can build on. I look forward to seeing what Saturday brings," Needs said.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. to finish off the VMI Invitational. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
