ROCK HILL, S.C.- Carson-Newman track and field's Abby Owens was named the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year this afternoon, June 5.
The SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete from each championship sport. The nominees are voted on by the SAC Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee, and nominees are selected based on athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as on service and leadership opportunities.
Owens is a senior pole vaulter for the Eagles from Ocala, Fla. Owens is a double major in math and philosophy, and she has a 4.0 GPA. During the indoor season, Owens was named the 2023 SAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Wealth Enhancement Group Elite 23 Award winner. She has been part of the Carson-Newman Platinum Scholar list for four straight years with the Eagles.
Aside from her academic achievement, Owens ended her senior season with four first-place finishes. Owens won gold at the 2023 SAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the pole vault with a 3.78-meter mark in the event, a new personal record.
