JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman track and field is headed to compete for a conference title at the SAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning Wednesday, May 3 in Anderson, S.C.
Carson-Newman track and field will wrap up the regular season at the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 4. The meet will take place at Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.
"We have people that are running well and jumping well. We are doing the little things well, so we are excited for the week. We care a lot about the conference championships. It's one of the rare meets where place can sometimes be more important than time," head coach for the track and field team David Needs said.
The first full day of competition will begin tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the decathlon events. Field events will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the men's hammer throw, and track events will take place beginning at 2:30 p.m. with the men's 1,500-meter race prelims.
On Thursday, May 4, decathlon events will begin at 9:00 a.m. Field events will start 11:00 a.m. with the women's discus throw, and track events will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the men's 4x100-meter relay finals.
"We had a team meeting last week and told our athletes that this is the meet where winning matters. We want to do that this week. We want to win. All of that said, we don't want anybody to overdo it and be hurt for nationals either. The conference meet matters a lot to us, but so does the national meet. We want to keep everything in perspective," Needs said.
The vast majority of preliminary races will take place on Wednesday, May 3, and most event finals will precede the awards ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4.
"For some of our seniors, this is it. So, we want to celebrate a little bit too this week. This is the last chance to really celebrate their careers and to celebrate them. That's our mindset going into the conference meet. We want to have fun and also appreciate where we are," Needs said.
