Charamba earns SAC Male Athlete of the Year

ROCK HILL, S.C.- Carson-Newman track and field athlete Makanakaishe Charamba was named the 2022-2023 South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year, the Conference announced Tuesday, July 18. 

The SAC Male and Female Athlete of the Year honors are awarded by the Conference and selected by a vote from league athletic directors. Along with this title, Charamba has been honored as both the SAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year and SAC Track & Field Athlete of the Year this year for the second consecutive time. He earned the title of SAC Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet for his two gold-medal performances and 22-point contribution to the team score during the 2023 SAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. 

Charamba also earned the 2023 USTFCCCA National and Southeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year awards at the conclusion of the season. He won the 100 and 200-meter dash events at the 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, making him a three-time national champion and two-time outdoor national champion. Charamba contributed to the Eagles' second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay as well. 

During the indoor season, Charamba grabbed gold in the SAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 60-meter dash with a 6.72-second performance. He competed in the 4x400-meter relay where the Eagles placed fourth. During the DII Pre-National meet, Charamba ran the fastest time in NCAA Division II in the 200-meter dash at 20.99 seconds. He won a national championship in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.55 seconds during the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field National Championships, and he earned All-American status in the 60-meter dash for a seventh-place finish in 6.82 seconds.
