Men picked third, women picked fifth in SAC Outdoor Preseason polls

ROCK HILL, S.C.- Carson-Newman track and field placed third and fifth in the 2023 SAC Outdoor Track and Field Preseason polls.

Carson-Newman men's track and field took the No. 3 spot with 98 points, while the women came in fifth with 84 points.

On the men's side, Wingate was picked to take gold in the 2023 SAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 11 first-place votes and 121 points. Lenoir-Rhyne came in second with 111 points, and Carson-Newman snagged the third-place spot with 98 points. Catawba and Limestone rounded out the top five teams in the voting.

Carson-Newman's Devon Moore was named a 2023 SAC Men's Track Athlete to Watch. Moore began the outdoor season with a first-place finish in the men's 100-meter dash at the Trojan Opener last weekend. Moore won gold in 10.25 seconds. His performance marks the top time in Division II for the event. Moore also raced with Siphosethu Boya, Ashwin Jood, and Makanakaishe Charamba in the 4x100-meter relay where the Eagles ran another fastest time in Division II, winning the event in 39.87.

Shane Connell is the Eagles' 2023 SAC Men's Field Athlete to Watch. In the men's high jump last weekend, Connell placed second with a 2.00-meter mark.

For the women, Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate tied for first place in the polls with 116 points and six first-place votes. Catawba placed third, and Anderson placed fourth in the voting. Carson-Newman rounded out the top five teams in the polls with 84 points.

Sade De Sousa was named a 2023 SAC Women's Track Athlete to Watch. De Sousa raced at the Trojan Opener in Anderson, S.C. last weekend and snagged a first-place finish in the women's 200-meter dash with a 24.64-second performance.

Abby Owens was the Eagles' 2023 SAC Women's Field Athlete to Watch. Owens started her outdoor season with a win in the women's pole vault. Owens 3.65-meter mark secured gold in the event and added 10 points to the women's score at the Trojan Opener.

Carson-Newman track and field garnered third and fifth place rankings in the 2023 SAC Outdoor Track and Field Preseason polls.
