New records in day one of SAC Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Carson-Newman track and field set multiple records during day one of the SAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Carson-Newman track and field kicked off the 2023 SAC Indoor Championships with five spots on the podium and a pair of personal records.

Abby Owens placed first in the women's pole vault with a 3.68-meter clearance. In the women's long jump Kadidja Sangare finished second with a 5.89-meter leap.

"We are proud of our day one medalists including the men's DMR, Kadidja in the long jump, and Abby Owens achieving her long sought out goal of securing a national qualifying mark and conference championship," head coach for the track and field team David Needs said.

The men's distance medley team secured bronze in 10:27.23 earlier today. Jackson Bostick also placed third in the men's heptathlon high jump with a 1.81-meter clearance. Kyle Nabe placed second in the shot put with an 11.19-meter mark.

"We had many great qualifying marks and personal bests today setting us up for an exciting finals day," Needs said.

Matthew Blackmon set a new personal record and secured a national qualifying mark in the men's 60-meter hurdles prelims with his second-place finish in 8.01 seconds. Kadidja Sangare placed second in the women's prelims in 8.71 seconds.

Makanakaishe Charamba placed first in the men's 60-meter prelims in 6.77 seconds, a national qualifying mark. Siphosethu Boya recorded a personal best and claimed a qualifying mark in the event with his sixth-place finish in 6.82 seconds. In the women's 60-meter prelims, Sade De Sousa placed fourth in 7.73 seconds to claim another national qualifying mark.

Tytiana Wilson set the meet record in the women's 400-meter prelims in 56.84 seconds to place first in heat one of the event. On the men's side of the event, Ashwin Jood placed fifth in 50.16.

"I know some who were disappointed today. We had some things that went very well and some things that didn't. Knowing their character, they will respond tomorrow. I know those who did well today will not take the day for granted. Our goal was to compete, and with this we hope to continue to improve tomorrow," Needs said.
