Eagles return from the University of the South to prepare for SAC Championships

SEWANEE, Tenn.- Carson-Newman track and field left the Sewanee Indoor Invitational with four first-place finishes.

The Eagles took gold and silver in the women's long jump event earlier today at the University of the South. Brooke Visser placed first in the women's long jump with a final clearance of 4.99 meters. Susan Nelson finished with silver after her 4.98-meter mark performance. In the men's high jump, KJ Kemp won with a clearance of 1.90 meters.

"We love to see event wins like by Camden, Brooke, Luke, and KJ Kemp. They put in a great effort this weekend," head track and field coach David Needs said.

In the men's long jump, Camden Fritz placed first with a 6.27-meter leap. Luke Smith finished first in the men's shot put with a 15.09-meter mark.

"Aside from just the wins, we also like to see improvement to help seeding for next week. Luke Smith and Taylor Steele had season best throws in the shot put," Needs said.

Taylor Steele placed second in the women's shot put with a 11.07-meter mark for her best performance of the season. Sydney Nunley placed fifth with an 8.94-meter mark in the event.

"It was also great to see Ian set a career best in the weight throw," Needs said.

Ian Salyer placed fourth in the men's weight throw with a 14.04-meter mark.

Matthew Bretscher placed third in the men's pole vault with a 3.65-meter mark. Marlee Baker rounded out the top five in the women's pole vault with her 2.60-meter performance.

"Even though we took a small group, we got a lot done in preparation for next week's conference championships. It was an all-around great effort by this group this weekend," Needs said.

The Eagles will be back in action for the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26.
